Dressing Ingredients
  • 2.25 cups mayonnaise For the best flavor, use a high-quality brand like Hellmann’s or Duke's.
  • 1 cup buttermilk Can be made by adding one tablespoon of white vinegar or lemon juice to a cup of milk, letting it sit for 5 minutes.
  • 2 tablespoons sugar Balances the acidity from the vinegar.
  • 1.5 teaspoons celery seed A must for that classic coleslaw flavor.
  • 0.75 teaspoon black pepper Freshly cracked is best for maximum flavor.
  • 0.25 teaspoon salt Always taste before adding more.
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar Adds brightness; can substitute with white vinegar.
  • 32 ounces coleslaw mix A mix of shredded cabbage and carrots.

Method

Preparation
  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the mayonnaise, buttermilk, sugar, apple cider vinegar, celery seed, salt, and black pepper. Whisk together until smooth.
  2. Taste your dressing and adjust the seasoning and vinegar to suit your preference.
  3. Add the coleslaw mix to the dressing and gently toss until all cabbage and carrots are evenly coated.
  4. Transfer to a serving bowl or airtight container and refrigerate for at least 2 hours before serving.
  5. Once chilled, give it a final toss and serve.

Notes

Chill the dressing for at least 2 hours to allow the flavors to meld. Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 7 days.
