Ingredients

Buttercream Base
  • 1 cup unsalted butter (softened to room temperature) Use high-quality butter for the best flavor—brands like Kerrygold or Plugra work wonders.
  • 4 cups powdered sugar Sift the powdered sugar to avoid a gritty texture.
  • 1/4 cup Kahlua liqueur Try other coffee liqueurs if Kahlua isn’t available, but Kahlua's distinct flavor is hard to beat.
  • 2 tablespoons heavy cream For an even richer texture, use full-fat cream.
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Use pure vanilla extract for a more aromatic flavor.
  • 1/2 cup cocoa powder (optional) Choose a high-quality cocoa powder such as Dutch-processed for a deeper flavor.

Method

Preparation
  1. In a large bowl, beat the softened butter with a hand mixer or stand mixer on medium speed until it becomes creamy—about 2-3 minutes.
  2. Gradually add the powdered sugar, one cup at a time, mixing well after each addition.
  3. Once all of the sugar has been mixed in, pour in the Kahlua, heavy cream, and vanilla extract. Mix on medium-high speed until the frosting is smooth and fluffy—approximately 2-3 minutes.
  4. If you’re going for the chocolate flavor, mix in cocoa powder at this stage until fully combined.
  5. Use immediately to frost cakes and cupcakes, or store in the refrigerator in an airtight container.

Notes

Kahlua Buttercream Frosting can be stored in the fridge for up to one week. Make it up to three days in advance and let it sit at room temperature for two hours before use.
